The ongoing standoff, which is taking place in Boone, North Carolina, has also left one deputy injured. Officers arrived at a property in Watauga County to conduct a welfare check at around 10am local time (3pm GMT).
A bomb squad is at the scene.
Rose Eiklor, of local Spectrum News 1 CLT, tweeted a video of a North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation bomb squad
Watauga County Sheriff Len Hagaman addressed the “tragic” incident as he thanked other law enforcement groups across the state for their support.
He said: “This is an incredibly tragic situation and our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved as well as their families and our community.
“I greatly appreciate the tremendous support we are receiving from law enforcement agencies across the region and the state.”
