Channel 4’s programming boss has criticised the ‘microwave moment’ of ‘reheated’ old TV shows – as the BBC confirmed it is reviving the former ITV entertainment show Gladiators.

Ian Katz, chief content officer at the broadcaster, said it was ‘depressing’ how many old shows were being brought back.

His comments come after ITV announced plans to bring back Big Brother while Channel 5 is reviving Challenge Anneka.

The BBC is also rumoured to be looking at bringing back reality series Survivor.

But Mr Katz admitted his own channel is guilty of the practice too.

The BBC’s top programming boss also pointed to Channel 4’s ‘reboot’ of The Great British Bake Off after the BBC stopped airing it.

Asked about the return of Big Brother at the Edinburgh TV Festival, Mr Katz said: ‘I do think there’s something depressing about this microwave moment we’re in, with so many old dishes being reheated. Hands up, we do some too…we’ve got Changing Rooms on air.’

BBC chief content officer Charlotte Moore responded: ‘They bought [C4] Bake Off and rebooted that, didn’t they? I don’t think it is depressing. I think it is a challenge.’
