    Britain is facing its coldest winter in a decade – and it could be chilly right up to New Year.

    After the biting daytime windchill of yesterday, weather experts warn there’s more snow and ice ahead. Last night, Cumbria Police declared a “major incident” because of heavy snow. Police said people should only travel where necessary,

    Snow shut Glasgow Airport in the morning as temperatures fell to -11C in Aviemore, Highlands, and -10C in Ravensworth, North Yorks. Overnight, up to four inches of snow was forecast to fall in the Midlands and North on hills, with an inch at lower levels.

    Overnight, up to four inches of snow was set to fall on hills in the Midlands and North. This evening will see the South and North facing flurries, with up to four inches for Wales.

    Experts warned of more snow and ice ahead – with lows of -12C possible. In a briefing to the Government, businesses and transport chiefs, the Met Office warns from November to January “the chance of cold is higher than for equivalent periods in many recent years”.

    The report adds ominously: “Impacts from cold weather are possible throughout the period.” The 10 years since 2013-14 had near average or mild temperatures.

    Further downfalls of heavy snow and icy conditions are expected as transport links are affected and amber alerts warn of potential power cuts for parts of the country. Temperatures dropped well into the minus Celsius for many last night with parts of the UK seeing conditions as cold as -10C overnight. It appears the longer term impact of such frosty weather is large weather warnings hitting the country.

    The Met Office currently says 10cm-15cm of snow is possible in some areas before showers begin to ease overnight. Snowy conditions could see some major disruption to travel across the country tomorrow. Reports added there was a "good chance that some rural communities could become cut off" and that power cuts were likely for mobile phone coverage, which could be affected.

    Travel delays were also expected and confirmed as a possibility by the Met Office, who say passengers could be stranded with their vehicles depending on conditions. A spokesman for the Met Office said: "Snow and ice this evening and into Sunday morning may lead to some disruption to transport and infrastructure."
