Corbyn should not be allowed to return to Labour says Wes Streeting

Jeremy Corbyn should not be allowed to return as a Labour MP after having whip removed, party’s health spokesman says

  • Wes Streeting accused former leader of mishandling Brexit and anti-Semitism
  • Labour’s left-wing have called for the whip to be returned to Jeremy Corbyn
  • A card vote on the proposal took place but was defeated by 62 to 38 per cent
  • The Islington North MP appeared at fringe events at Labour party conference

Jeremy Corbyn should not be restored as a Labour MP, the Shadow Health Secretary insisted yesterday.

Wes Streeting, a long-time critic of Mr Corbyn, shut down a question about whether the former Labour leader, who now sits as an independent MP, should have the whip returned to him. Mr Corbyn, who had the whip removed in 2020 but remains a Labour member, has appeared at fringe events at the conference.

MPs and Labour’s Left-wing members have continued to call for the leadership to reverse their decision, as well as show their support for striking workers on picket lines.

When asked if Mr Corbyn should be reinstated, Mr Streeting told Sky News: ‘No, I don’t think he should.’

He ruled out joining picket lines, saying that the party was ‘going to do one better’ by ‘deliver[ing] a Labour government that improves the fortunes of working people.’

Mr Streeting was a consistent critic of the former leader’s actions from the backbenches, accusing him of mishandling Brexit and anti-Semitism.

However, Sir Keir Starmer has faced renewed calls from the party’s Left wing to reinstate Mr Corbyn, with some party delegates forcing a vote at conference to allow the Islington North MP to run for re-selection as a Labour candidate.

A card vote on the proposal took place at the end of Sunday’s session in Liverpool, but was defeated by 62 to 38 per cent.

Mr Streeting, who is tipped for a future leadership run, also backed Sir Keir’s view on frontbenchers joining picket lines.

Dockers in Liverpool have called on the Labour leadership to stand with them after Sir Keir’s ban on shadow ministers showing their physical support for industrial action. During conference they have branded the Labour leader as being a ‘red Tory’ for not meeting with them.

Mr Streeting said: ‘I want to be in government. I want to solve problems, not be out on the streets protesting. I did that when I was involved in student politics and as a Labour party member.

‘We are tired of protesting, we are ready to govern – that’s how you make a difference.
