Delta flight passengers injured after plane hit major turbulence

Injured passengers are stretchered off Delta flight while others are bandaged and hold ice packs to their head after plane flying from Italy to Atlanta hit major turbulence leaving at least 11 hospitalized

  • One couple said ordeal caused ‘serious head injuries’ and ‘blood and awfulness’

Eleven people on a Delta Air Lines flight were hospitalized yesterday after the plane hit turbulence while heading to Atlanta, Georgia, officials said.

Shocking footage snapped by dismayed passengers showed how several victims were stretchered out of the plane held aloft on paramedics’ shoulders, while others clasped ice packs against their heads to reduce the swelling of painful impacts.

Flight 175 had left Milan, Italy, on Tuesday and was about 40 miles north-east of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport when the crew reported severe turbulence, according to the US Federal Aviation Administration, which said it will investigate.

A couple who were passengers on the flight told Fox5: ‘Looked to be about 12 people with serious head injuries. Several flight attendants, too. Bunch of blood and awfulness.

‘My fiancée and I are so freaked out, we are renting a car and driving to our final destination instead.’

The couple said all passengers were kept onboard for an additional two hours while those who were injured were triaged.

The Airbus A350 landed safely at Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Tuesday evening.

Delta later confirmed that 11 passengers were hospitalized, but provided no further details on the injuries or the condition of the people involved.

The plane was carrying 151 passengers, 10 flight attendants and four pilots, Delta said.

‘Delta Care Team members are mobilizing to connect with customers,’ the airline said in a statement.

A spokesperson later added that Delta agents were providing food, lodging and re-booking for the uninjured customers.

‘Our priority is taking care of our customers and crew who sustained injuries. We are grateful for the first responders who met the aircraft to provide medical attention and who are transporting the injured to [the] hospital.’
