A man high on glue has been arrested for attempted murder after a nine-year-old boy was attacked with a machete and left with a fractured skull.

The horrifying incident happened at the boy's school in Thailand after the man allegedly scaled a fence to carry out the attack.

Police officers subsequently arrested the suspect – a 45-year-old man called Mr Atip – at a house, where it is said he confessed to inhaling glue.

It has been reported that the man has a history of drug abuse.

Police received a call about the attack from a teacher at the school in the Nong Ya Sai district of Suphan Buri province and the boy was taken to hospital.

He had been sitting with a small group of pupils near to the fence in a school exercise area at about 10am when he was stabbed in the head with a knife that was around one foot (30cm) long.

The attacker climbed back over the fence after his knife attack and then fled to try and hide himself in a nearby house.

But the police caught up with him and have detained him on charges of attempted murder and of carrying weapons into a town or village without permission.

No drugs, however, were detected after he had provided a urine sample.

The boy remains in a serious condition and was left needing brain surgery after the attack.

According to Thai media reports, the victim of the attack did not see his assailant scaling the fence, as he was sitting with his back to it, but the children that he was with did spot the danger and ran away.

After his sickening ordeal, the injured pupil then ran to a teacher, crying in pain.

The suspect made a swift getaway after he had been spotted by a teacher and the school's caretaker.
