Greggs joins the long list of businesses CLOSING for Queen’s funeral after McDonald’s says it will shut UK branches from midnight until 5pm on bank holiday Monday to allow staff to ‘pay their respects’

Greggs has joined the growing band of businesses that said they will not open or will offer restricted hours on Monday to give staff time off to watch he Queen’s funeral. 

Several major retailers, fast food chains and entertainment venues have already announced their intention to shut down during the funeral. 

In a Tweet, Greggs said: ‘To give our colleagues the opportunity to pay their respects to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Greggs shops will be closed on Monday 19th September. 

‘A small number of our shops, operated by our franchise partners, may remain open. Thanks for your understanding.’

McDonalds earlier announced it is to shut all its restaurants in the UK on Monday from midnight until 5pm to allow staff to ‘pay their respects’ to the Queen. 

Her Majesty’s state funeral is taking place at Westminster Abbey, after the four-day period of her lying in state at Westminster Hall comes to an end. 

The fast food chain said in a statement posted on Twitter: ‘In honour of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and to enable everyone at McDonald’s to pay their respects, our restaurants across the UK will be closed from midnight until 5pm on Monday, 19th September’.

It comes after the majority of Britain’s supermarkets also said they would close to honour the Queen.

Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Waitrose, Aldi, Morrisons, Iceland and Lidl are among the big chains to make the move. 

Poundland, Argos, and John Lewis stores will also close their doors on the day of the service.

M&S has confirmed it will close stores in the UK for the entire day, with some limited exceptions in London and Windsor, which will close during the service. 

There have been mixed reaction to businesses and companies’ announcements on shutting for the day.

McDonald’s was no exception with some customers expressing disappointment at the decision.

Others simply used the name to say the restaurant was in ‘McMourning’ and was ‘McSad’.

Center Parcs faced further backlash today after it revealed their facilities would be closed for guests staying at their resorts while also warning new arrivals not to arrive on the day of the Queen’s state funeral. 

The holiday chain had been inundated with complaints after it said its five sites would close from 10am on Monday September 19 ‘as a mark of respect’, leaving guests scrambling as they struggled to find alternative accommodation.

The company was earlier forced into an embarrassing U-turn after being contacted by thousands of furious families whose holiday plans were left in tatters by Center Parc’s plan to turf them out.

Parks will be now remain open for those who planned to stay there on Monday, though the villages will still be closed and there will be limited activities as the Queen’s funeral goes ahead. Swimming pools, sports activities, restaurants are all expected to be shut on Monday.

And although guests who arrive before the state funeral will now be allowed to stay on the resort, Center Parcs has advised those hoping to arrive on Monday that they should not travel and said it will be offering discounts.
