Air raid sirens in Eilat

Air raid sirens went off in the area of the Red Sea city of Eilat this morning.

Israel’s military said it downed an approaching ‘aerial target’.

After an initial warning of a possible ‘hostile aircraft intrusion’, which sent residents of the popular tourist resort running for shelter, the military said its ‘systems identified an aerial target approaching Israeli territory’.

‘There was no threat or risk to civilians,’ it added.

UN warns urgent ceasefire is a 'matter of life and death for millions'

The UN has warned an urgent ceasefire is a ‘matter of life and death for millions’ who are still trapped in Gaza.

The head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, Phillipe Lazzarina, said ‘the handful of convoys’ allowed into Gaza through the Egyptian border crossing ‘is nothing compared to the needs of over 2 million people trapped in Gaza’.

‘The system in place to allow aid into Gaza is geared to fail unless there is political will to make the flow of supplies meaningful, matching the unprecedented humanitarian needs,’ he said.

Significantly fewer humanitarian aid trucks have reached the besieged enclave than are required, U.N. officials said, and civil order has broken down with people storming U.N. warehouses in search of food.

That has put four U.N. aid distribution centres and a storage facility out of action, the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) said on Monday.

‘It’s a disaster on top of a disaster. Health needs are soaring and our ability to meet those needs is rapidly declining,’ World Health Organization regional emergencies chief Rick Brennan said, reiterating international calls for a ceasefire to enable a larger humanitarian operation.

Aid trucks have been trickling into Gaza from Egypt over the past week via Rafah, the main crossing that does not border Israel.

PM Netanyahu dismisses calls for ceasefire

In a news conference late Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected calls for a cease-fire to facilitate the release of captives or end the war, which he has said will be long and difficult.
