ITV’s Technical Director Roger Pearce has died while on the job in Qatar, the network has confirmed.

The sports technical boss, who was in charge of the network’s 2022 FIFA World Cup coverage, passed away in the Middle East on Monday.

The technical director had been with ITV for 43 years at the time he passed away, covering World Cups, UEFA Europe Championships and the Rugby World Cup.

‘We have some very sad news to bring you from here in Qatar,’ announced ITV sports presenter Mark Pougatch on Monday evening. ‘ITV’s Technical Director Roger Pearce, who was here embarking on his eighth World Cup.

The technical director had been with ITV for 43 years at the time he passed away, covering World Cups, UEFA Europe Championships and the Rugby World Cup

‘Roger and his team are the brilliant people who bring the pictures into your homes and make it all happen. Roger was a hugely respected figure in the TV sports broadcasting industry.’

‘He always had a smile on his face and left a smile on your face, he was utterly dedicated, professional, charming and hugely popular, he’ll be missed by so many people inside the industry and at home.’

He is believed to have died only five weeks before his retirement while on assignment in Qatar, a friend said, according to The Mirror.

The network announced the news ahead of Tuesday evening’s Group B clash between the Welsh and USA teams.
