Jailed tennis ace Boris Becker could be deported once he has finished his two-and-a-half year prison term for fraudulently hiding £2.5m in assets

Jailed tennis ace Boris Becker could be facing deportation as soon as he walks free, the Home Office has confirmed.

The 54-year-old is currently serving two-and-a-half years for hiding £2.5 million in assets and loans in an attempt to avoid paying off his debts.

It has been revealed that the German is eligible for deportation once he was served his sentence, as is the case for any foreign national convicted of a crime in the UK, which means he is unlikely to resume his role as a pundit on British television.

The three-time Wimbledon champion and former world number 1 has been moved to the low-risk jail HMP Huntercombe in Oxfordshire, after initially being sent to Wandsworth jail in April.

According to prison sources, he fills his time with games of table tennis and teaching sports science.

Once reportedly worth a huge £127 million, Becker is now understood to be completely broke.

His girlfriend Lilian de Carvalho Monteiro and his sons Noah, 28, and Elias, 22, visited him in prison during the Wimbledon Championships earlier this month.

BBC pundit and fellow three-time Wimbledon winner John McEnroe, 63, said: “Boris is a friend of mine. This is just horrible. I want to see him if I possibly can and if he’s willing to see people.

“I just feel terrible. He’s one of the greatest players that ever played the game. He’s been going through a lot for a long time. He kept telling me it’s going to be OK, it’s under control. That’s Boris.”

Mr McEnroe was criticised for referencing his old friend and former rival on TV, as was Sue Barker.

During commentary, Mr McEnroe said: “Boris, we love you. We miss you, man.”

Ms Barker, who was anchoring the coverage for the BBC for the last time, added: “We do indeed.”

A Home Office spokesman said: “Any foreign national convicted of a crime and given a prison sentence is considered for deportation at the earliest opportunity.”
