The worst party ever? Lib Dems sing anti-Tory songs about ex-PM ‘Liz the Lettuce’ in bizarre ‘Glee Club’ ritual at annual conference
Liz Truss was the target of Liberal Democrat members last night as they mocked her short-lived spell as prime minister during their annual ‘Glee Club’ singalong.
The event, a tradition of the party’s annual conference every autumn, saw delegates poke fun at Ms Truss’s 49 days in office.
In lyrics set to the tune of ‘Let It Be’ by The Beatles, they sung ‘Lettuce Liz’ in a nod to how the ex-PM was outlasted by a salad vegetable during her final days in No10.
But Ms Truss – who was a Lib Dem member in her youth – isn’t the only former PM to have been targeted in song lyrics at the party’s ‘Glee Club’.
Another ditty traditionally sung at the event, titled ‘The Lib-Lab Lie’, includes the chorus: ‘Tony Blair can f*** off and die.’

Ms Truss’s short time as PM has been compared to the shelf-life of a lettuce. The Daily Star last year set up a live stream of an iceberg lettuce next to a framed photo of the then PM
As Ms Truss’s premiership crumbled last year – amid economic turmoil in the wake of her disastrous ‘mini-Budget’ – the expected brevity of her time as PM was compared to the shelf-life of a lettuce.
The Daily Star subsequently set up a live stream of an iceberg lettuce next to a framed photo of Ms Truss.
The Lib Dem ‘Glee Club’ paid tribute to the stunt during their sing-song last night as they gathered at the conference centre in Bournemouth.
The lyrics to ‘Lettuce Liz’ read: ‘When I find myself in times of trouble, Graham Brady comes to me, passing me the dressing, lettuce be.
‘And in my hour of darkness, He is standing right in front of me, passing me the dressing, lettuce be.
‘Lettuce Liz, Lettuce Liz, Lettuce Liz, Lettuce Liz, Outlasted by a Lettuce, Lettuce Liz.’
Lib Dem members have previously sung about Brexit and their time in the coalition government with the Tories during the ‘Glee Club’ event.
One popular tune, a variation of football anthem ‘Three Lions’, uses the words ‘gold Stars on my flag’ in tribute to the EU.
The lyrics read: ‘Gold stars on the flag, four freedoms still gleaming. Glory years of peace, keep us all campaigning. I know that was then, but we’ll be there again.’
The ‘Glee Club’ has been criticised by alcohol charities in previous years for a song featuring lyrics about late Lib Dem leader Charles Kennedy’s alcohol addiction.
