Meghan Markle saw her royal connections as an extension of her celebrity, a royal expert has claimed.

Nicole Lampert, the former Daily Mail Showbiz editor, wrote for Newsweek, saying that the Royal Family is "thriving" without the Sussexes, who now live Stateside.

Lampert said that Prince Harry was "the darling of our nation" while Meghan was a welcome addition to the Firm, looking initially like "an asset."

"She was full of ideas for doing good and seemed to revel in the public gaze. But it all quickly unraveled," she wrote.

"It is clear that Meghan appears to see the royal family as an extension of celebrity, while in reality, she and her husband have earned millions from Netflix and Spotify for doing nothing, simply by being extensions of the royal family."

The journalist added that the pair's UK relevance is on the wane, and that they released the first photo of their son Archie whilst in the US, because some people there still think they're relevant.

The news comes as a senior royal source reportedly said the palace was keen to step back from the “soap opera” surrounding Meghan Markle and Prince Harry.

After "Megxit" was announced in 2020, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, along with baby Archie, left the UK to "carve out a progressive new role" and become "financially independent" Stateside.

After spending the earlier part of the year in Canada, they moved to Los Angeles.

They were said to be looking forward to the publication of a tell-all biography that August which claimed to reveal the “true story” of the royal split.

This included intimate details of an alleged rift with the Prince William and Kate Middleton, with reports of a split between Harry and William.

While the writing of Finding Freedom was said to have been given the Sussexes’ blessing, the rest of the Firm remained silent about any revelations the book contained.

At the time, a senior palace source told The Sunday Times: “The rest of the Royal Family will not be telling their side of the story.

"They feel that in this new world, people are more interested in seeing the family support frontline workers than reading about their internal politics.

“It was a soap opera. Everyone knows the narrative that’s coming. The feeling is that drama and everything that comes with it has left. Let the rest of the royal family get on with it.”
