Online trolls have shamed newlywed Meghan Markle for bearing her shoulders during a royal engagement, claiming she broke protocol.
The Duchess of Sussex wore a stunning dusty pink Carolina Herrera dress to the Trooping the Colour ceremony – but the off-shoulder cut stirred controversy, with some claiming "she’ll never be a lady".
Others declared she "craves the limelight" as they slated her outfit choice and compared her to the Duchess of Cambridge.
Trooping the Colour is the Queen’s birthday parade, and she was clearly OK with the former actress’s ensemble.
In fact, the monarch in the past has bared skin herself when wearing strapless gowns, as did Princess Diana at a ceremony in 1987 when she opted for a ‘daring’ plunging neckline.
Kensington Palace tweeted a picture of the Duke and Duchess in a carriage as they attended the ceremony last week for the first time together since tying the knot last month, attracting an onslaught of comments from trolls suggesting the on-show skin was "inappropriate".
Jennie D said: "Happy for MM and HRH Prince Harry. However, her off the shoulder dress is inappropriate. She needs to ease her style changes. # notfullyaroyal # etiquetteplease #m akeusproud."
DRobert said: "Kate will ALWAYS be the classy one. Who wears an off-the-shoulder number to such an event? Oh, MM that’s right."
Mizz Yona tried to stick up for Meghan, saying "the poor lady just can’t win".
In response Swati chipped in: ""lady"? She will never be a "lady". She broke the royal protocol again by wearing a sexy dress when a more discreet outfit was de rigueur and not a "off shoulder dress". She will never learn because she craves the limelight."
A Twitter user named alc wrote: "Someone needs to tell Meghan that off the shoulder is a bit much for this event. She’s beautiful and could carry off any dress, but this is not the right dress for today."
Shari Cunningham thought Meghan was "pushing it" and said: "I have a feeling she’s going to push the limits a little too much?!"
Kitty added: "Why is Meghan the ONLY person on the balcony who just couldn’t follow Royal protocol for her dress? The attention wh**ing is astounding and a complete disrespect to royal tradition. Why is this allowed? The Monarchy is becoming a joke because the snowflake wants to be different."
Others compared Meghan to Kate Middleton, who has previously worn an off-shoulder gown to The Queen’s Birthday Party in Germany, in July last year.
On the same tour last year, Kate also wore a shoulder and collar bone-bearing gown to the Queen’s birthday celebrations in Poland.
Some did leap to Meghan’s defence though, with Morgan M tweeting: "I’m so annoyed with/over these clickbait articles about Meghan Markle "breaking royal protocol" for mundane things. Oh no, she wore a nail polish a shade too dark! Oh no, her shoulders! She’s doing JUST fine and the Queen doesn’t seem to care so why should we…"
