It's official – a new record temperature has been reached in the UK.

Yesterday (Monday, July 18) Met Office officials issued a warning that temperatures could soar as high as 43C today (July 19).

And it was confirmed this morning that the UK has experienced its hottest day on record, with the temperature reaching 39.1C in Charlwood, Surrey, according to provisional Met Office figures.

The forecaster's chief executive Penelope Endersby confirmed "we may well see the hottest day in the UK in history", and today has beaten the previous record instantly with a temperature of 39.1C in Charlwood, Surrey.

A Met Office spokesman tweeted: "A temperature of 39.1°C has provisionally been recorded at Charlwood, Surrey.

"If confirmed this will be the highest temperature ever recorded in the UK

"Temperatures are likely to rise further through today."

It comes after the UK recorded the warmest night on record as Britain continued to sizzle in the scorching heatwave.

News of the scorcher days prompted the Met Office to issue a red warning – the first of its kind – and to advise the public "to do as little as possible" and avoid public transport where possible.

But the previous temperature of 38.7c, recorded in Cambridge in 2019, has now been smashed for what is likely to be the first of many times today.

And while many are hoping to work from home in a bid to avoid the heat, the Met Office also warned that this might not be the best answer.

A spokesman said: “There is a high risk of failure of heat-sensitive systems and equipment.

“That could potentially lead to localised loss of power and other essential services, such as water or mobile phone services.”

The hot weather is focusing mainly London, specifically Essex, as Charlwood hit 34.8c at around midday, with Reading getting to 37c around the same time.

The north is also going to get hit by the weather, with temperatures estimated to hit 34c today, and 38c tomorrow.

Scotland, however, might hit around 20c – but will be grey and miserable.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Paul Gundersen said: “Nights are also likely to be exceptionally warm, especially in urban areas.

“This is likely to lead to widespread impacts on people and infrastructure. Therefore, it is important people plan for the heat and consider changing their routines. This level of heat can have adverse health effects.”
