Mother-of-one dies after being struck by a car while on a bicycle ride

Mother-of-one triathlete, 35, is killed in a hit and run while on her morning bicycle ride – sparking police appeal to track down driver of black Honda Civic that hit her

A mother and triathlete was hit by a car and killed while enjoying a morning bike ride, sparking a police appeal to find the driver of the vehicle. 

Mum-of-one Lucy John died after her bike was hit by a black Honda Civic near a roundabout on the A48 at Laleston, Bridgend, south Wales, on Sunday morning at around 9:10am. 

The 35-year-old, who was described as a ‘beautiful soul’ by friends, was a member of Pen-Y-Bont triathlon club in Bridgend and had recently completed an Ironman event. 

Other cyclists and passers-by tried to help before emergency services arrived but she was pronounced dead at hospital.

Paying tribute to Ms John,  Elsa Jade, of Pen-Y-Bont triathlon club said: ‘It’s with the heaviest of hearts that we write this but today we lost one of the most beautiful souls after she was involved in an accident whilst riding.

‘Lucy had all the qualities you could ever hope to have. She was fiercely determined, enthusiastic and was dedicated to every aspect of her life. Family, work, friends, coaching and training.

‘We have been inundated with messages relaying peoples memories of Lucy and each of them are example of what a truly incredible, inspirational and helpful person that she was. To say she will be missed is an understatement.

‘Our love and condolences go out to Evan and the rest of Lucy’s family at this time.

‘Shine bright up there beautiful girl.’

South Wales Police have now launched an appeal for witnesses to the crash. A spokesperson said: ‘A black Honda Civic was in collision with a bicycle and, despite the best efforts of members of the public and emergency services, the cyclist, a 35-year-old woman from Bridgend, was taken to hospital where she later died from her injuries.’

The mother-of-one and hairdresser had not long completed an Ironman event 

DC Alun Efstathiou added: ‘I want to thank those members of the public who assisted at the scene and to the local community for their patience while the road was closed while we carried out our investigations.

‘My thoughts are with the deceased’s family at this time.

‘We would like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who may have any dash-cam footage of the incident or who witnessed the manner of driving of the Honda prior to the collision.’
