A passenger has sparked a debate online after refusing to give her window seat up for a mother who wanted to be sat next to her children.

TikToker Tammy Nelson went viral online in the clip seen over 2.8 million times as she recounted her interaction with her fellow passengers on a recent flight.

Posing the question to her followers, Nelson asked: ‘What would you do?’ in regard to her recent predicament.

‘I got on the plane and a woman was sitting in my seat and when I mentioned it to her, she said, ”Oh, you want to sit here? I thought we could switch because these are my kids” (she points to the two seats next to mine).’

Nelson said she told the mother she would be happy to swap seats with her as long as she could move to another window seat.

But the mom’s original seat was to be crammed in the middle, between the aisle and window.

Nelson said the mom then ‘points to the row behind us and says, ”Mine is right there.” (It’s the middle seat.).’

In her TikTok caption, Nelson said she had only 90 minutes of sleep the night before and was soon to be giving a presentation to some 500 people.

Nelson said she was ‘desperate’ for the kip ahead of her work event, and would obviously find this much easier sat by the window. She said she did not switch seats.

Providing further much needed context in her TikTok caption, Nelson noted another crucial piece of information: the children the mother was wanting to sit next to were in their teens.

‘Before anyone comes after me,’ she wrote, ‘the kids looked like they were about 11 and 15-years-old. And the mom was in arms-reach of both of them from the middle seat in the row behind us.’

Nelson said: ‘The mom proceeded to complain for at least 15 minutes to the person next to her loud enough for me to hear.

‘But the woman actually defended me – several times. It was so kind and I appreciated it so much because I was feeling really guilty.’

After the video neared 3 million views, thousands shared their comments, with some taking Nelson’s side while others agreed with the mother.

‘I’m a flight attendant and mothers do this so much, even with grown kids! A row won’t kill ya!,’ one said.

Nelson agreed: ‘Right! As a mom I’ve had this happen too and it’s not a big deal unless they are very young or have special needs.’

‘People should book seats together if they want to sit together,’ one commenter wrote.

‘We fly often with our 3 kids and pay to sit together, we don’t expect people to move for us,’ another said.

Following the influx of support on her side, Nelson said: ‘I was seriously so grateful to the stranger who defended me.’

Others continued: ‘I am extremely bothered by the fact that she automatically sat in your seat and was like oh, I thought we’d switch….. what?!’

‘Good for you, i swear parents think to themselves, oh everyone will accommodate me and my children. um, no, strangers are not her ”village”,’ another said.
