Police stop white van driver who de-iced TINY patch of windscreen

Is this Britain’s STUPIDEST motorist? Police stop white van driver who de-iced TINY patch of windscreen to drive in the cold

  • The driver was stopped at a petrol station in Harlow by Essex Police last night
  • Passenger seat was brimming with litter which could have fallen onto controls

Police had to stop possibly Britain’s stupidest motorist after they only de-iced a tiny patch of windscreen of their white van to drive dangerously in the cold.

The owner of the white Ford Transit van was stopped at a Sainsbury’s petrol station in Harlow, Essex last night after failing to properly de-ice their windscreen after freezing temperatures across the UK.

The driver, who has not been named, instead chose to clear a tiny circle of the windscreen above the steering wheel – so while they could see directly ahead they had almost no visibility to the left and right.

Officers were also shocked by the grim state of the van’s interior, which was so overflowing with litter on the passenger seat that ‘it could have fallen onto the driver or controls’ – potentially causing an accident.

The clutter – which included an egg box, a used plastic fork, a metal tin, a glass bottle and a stray £10 note – was piled high enough to partially obscure the passenger side window.

The rest of the windscreen can be seen covered in thick ice – a result of the below-freezing temperatures sweeping across the UK.

Essex Road Police tweeted the appalling discovery today, writing: ‘This driver was reported for driving a vehicle in a dangerous condition in Harlow last night after only bothering to de-ice a very small section of the window.

‘There was also a great deal of loose clutter on the passenger seat which could have fallen onto the driver or controls.’

Social media users have slammed the driver for their reckless approach to road safety.

One said: ‘Some people need a good slap. Who thinks it’s OK to drive around with a small section of their windscreen clear?’

Another wrote: ‘B****y stupid. Simples.’

A third commented: ‘Windscreen would never have defrosted.

‘Look at all the c*** in front of the air ducts under the windscreen.’

While another person added: ‘Lazy selfish t***.’

The Highway Code states that a car must be fully cleared of snow and ice on the windscreen in order to ensure safe driving.

Failure to do so could result in a fine of £60 and three penalty points.
