Private investigator who exposed Jimmy Savile shoots down theory Jill Dando was killed for investigating infamous paedophile

  • Investigator Mark Williams-Thomas, 53, has said there is ‘no sense’ in the theory

A private investigator has dismissed a theory that TV presenter Jill Dando was murdered because she was investigating Jimmy Savile.

Following the release of a new Netflix series titled ‘Who Killed Jill Dando’ on Tuesday, private investigator and presenter Mark Williams-Thomas, 53, has said there is ‘no sense’ in the theory.

Former Crimewatch presenter Dando was shot dead aged 37 outside her home in Fulham, West London, on April 26, 1999.

Posting on X, formerly Twitter, Mr Williams-Thomas wrote: ‘A few people on here suggesting that #JillDando was killed for investigating Savile and what she knew.

‘Those that think this, take a minute to apply common sense to the argument. I was the one that exposed Savile got a mountain of evidence against him – exposed it full to the world leading to many people being arrested including high profile people- tried / or managed to kill me.

Williams-Thomas, a child protection specialist, played an integral part in exposing Savile (pictured) and his actions back in 2012, researching and presenting ITV documentary Exposure: The Other Side Of Jimmy Savile, which aired on October 3 that year.

‘Thats because that theory has absolutely no sense to it’, he added.

The murder of Dando led to one of the biggest man hunts in the history of the Metropolitan Police.

Sex offender Barry George was convicted of Ms Dando’s murder in 2001 but he was acquitted at a retrial in 2008.

The newly-released Netflix series features interviews with Nigel Dando, who is nine years older than his late sister.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Today programme on Tuesday, Nigel said: ‘It was a painful time and it remains a painful memory’.

‘But I thought, well, if I get involved, I can do my bit and maybe overall this documentary may just jog somebody’s conscience into coming forward and confessing that they were the person who pulled the trigger on the day in question.

‘It’s as simple as in one way but it’s a difficult thing to expect to happen. And I have to be realistic.

‘That here we are 24 years on, whoever killed Jill is still at large; 24 years on, are they still alive?

‘My belief is that if they are alive, then they do have a conscience and programmes like this may just prick the conscience of whoever did it.

‘There are also people around who have some knowledge of this. I would say to them, it’s never too late.’
