Rishi Sunak's 'old' mobile disconnected from WhatsApp after scare

Rishi Sunak’s ‘old’ mobile number is disconnected from WhatsApp as footage of prank call is deleted from social media after security alert… but voicemail STILL works

Rishi Sunak’s ‘old’ mobile number appears to have been disconnected from WhatsApp after a security scare.

Concerns were sparked after footage of a prank call was posted online, showing a phone ringing and then seemingly going through to the PM’s voicemail.

The social media post has now been deleted, while the number is no longer showing as linked to a WhatsApp account.

However, it was still live and ringing through to the answerphone this morning.

There have been reports that Mr Sunak changed his contact details when he became premier.

He told the Covid inquiry that he does ‘not have access’ to WhatsApp messages from when he was chancellor because he had switched his phone several times and not backed them up.

However, the fact that the phone still goes through to answerphone has raised questions about why it remains active.

Downing Street refused to comment on security matters.

The incident, first reported by the Sun, has echoes of a similar scare that hit Boris Johnson two years ago, when he was forced to change his number.

Popular gossip newsletter Popbitch gave its readers clues on how to find the then-PM’s number, pointing them to a press release from his time as MP for Henley in 2006.

The number was written on the bottom of the press release.
