Sex addict rapist who spiked women’s drinks and violated them with objects including a baseball bat is jailed for 24 years

  • Evans ‘laughed’ at one of his victims who complained of pain in intimate areas

A vile rapist who spiked his victim’s drinks and violated them as they were passed out unconscious has been jailed for 24 years.

Former soldier Steven Evans, 33, was said to be a sex addict who demanded intercourse up to 11 times a day.

He was found guilty of a series of offences that included drugging his victims and performing sexual acts on them as they slept.

The women carried on sleeping wholly unaware of what was happening to them but would sometimes come round in a groggy condition to find Evans molesting them.

He even violated the women with sex aids plus other objects including a cucumber, a shampoo bottle, TV remote and a baseball bat as they were sleeping off the effects of the drugs.

Father of two Evans, of Alton Square, Openshaw, Greater Manchester, denied 37 offences put to him, despite police finding 61 photographs and 35 videos of his attacks.

The court heard that an investigation was carried out by GMP North Manchester CID in December 2022 after one of Evans’ victims reported finding an old mobile phone containing multiple explicit images.

But the victim had no recollection of the events and she also revealed that Evans had raped her while she was conscious.

She also disclosed that she had woken up a number of times to find that intimate parts of her body were hurting.

Evans was said to have laughed and discouraged her from going to hospital.

Also internet searches for the word ‘sexsomnia’ were found on his mobile phone.

Police identified another woman believed to be a victim of Evans who told officers she was raped, sexually assaulted and believed she had been spiked.

She said Evans was controlling and coercive.

Also, it is claimed he would pressure her for sex and threatened to harm himself if she ever left.

One woman known as Miss A now undergoes a nightly ritual of tucking her pyjamas into her socks and tightly tying the cord on her pyjama trousers as she is still fearful that someone will unclothe her and assault her in her sleep.

Another woman called Miss B has installed new locks and security cameras at her home, has suffered sleeplessness and nightmares and has developed an eating disorder.

In a statement, Miss B said: ‘I attempted suicide on several occasions as I just didn’t want to live anymore and the trauma was simply too much to deal with.

‘I was completely unable to cope with the things Steven had done and I thought it would be easier if I was dead so I wouldn’t have to think about it anymore.

‘The devastation and damage he has caused to my life have caused me serious mental and physical anguish. This has totally changed me as a person and my outlook on life and I feel scarred by what I have been through.’

At Minshull Street Crown Court, Manchester, Evans was convicted by a jury of 37 offences including 15 offences of rape, nine of sexual assault and four of administering a noxious substance involving a total of three women.

He must serve a minimum of 16 years before being considered for parole and following his release will be licence until the year 2055 under the terms of an extended sentence.

The incidents occurred between 2015 and 2021.

Prosecuting, Mr Alaric Bassano said: ‘He engaged in unusual and depraved sexual conduct towards victims with common themes showing him drugging others without their knowledge, sexually assaulting sleeping women and recording the offences on his mobile telephones.

‘A person who is asleep cannot consent to sexual activity. This was particularly depraved sexual conduct.’

Mr Bassano added: ‘He was described as wanting sex all the time – sometimes 9–11 times a day. One woman who found this overbearing and refused to have sex with him.

‘But he would then sulk and he masturbate himself in her presence.’

A relative who visited one of the victims recalled how Evans was at the house and she saw him putting a tablet into Miss A’s drink.

When the relative confronted him about what was doing, Evans said Miss A was ‘crazy’ and this was one of the tablets prescribed for her condition.

A third woman Miss C was at Evans’ home with her boyfriend when she was left a ‘powdery feeling in her mouth’ after drinking wine.

Shortly afterwards she felt ‘faint, weak and blurry-eyed’.

Her boyfriend had earlier seen Evans crushing tablets with a spoon in the kitchen before handing out drinks but when asked what he was doing, Evans retorted: ‘Nothing.’

He later passed out too.

The couple were later in bed when Evans sneaked into their bedroom and began crawling along the floor before interfering with the waistband of Miss C’s pyjamas.

The boyfriend came round to find Evans lying on the floor with his hand under the covers and molesting Miss C. He shouted ‘Get the f*** out’ and Evans fled the property. Police were called.

Evans denied wrongdoing claiming the incidents never took place. He said snoring heard in one clip was a family dog sleeping in the same room and said Miss B was pretending to be asleep in a sexual ‘role-playing’ game.

Sentencing Judge Matthew Corbett-Jones told Evans: ‘Your ability to detach yourself from the realities of what was happening is deeply troubling. These depraved acts were performed by you to feed your warped sexual appetite.

‘You had no compunction about inflicting severe physical and psychological damage and you deliberately degraded your victims in order to bring yourself sexual arousal. You have no real remorse for what you did to them in order to gain pleasure for yourself. The impact on your victims has been profound.’

After the hearing, Wakkas Javed, Senior Crown Prosecutor for CPS North West’s Rape and Serious Sexual Offence Unit, said: ‘Evans is a danger to women. He has shown no remorse and compounded the trauma of his victims by making them re-live their ordeal, in giving evidence at court.

‘Our specialist prosecutors know there is no typical response to rape and every victim can act differently including freezing or not screaming for help.

‘During the trial, we addressed the jury on rape myths, in order to combat any harmful assumptions about consent.’
