This is the terrifying moment that the slingshot ride at Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park snapped its band as riders took off.

The seating pod on the fairground ride at the popular London Christmas attraction crashed into the support beam with riders still inside last night.

A video on social media shows two people seated in the spherical metal pod as an electrical mechanism tightens up the cords which launch it into to air like a slingshot.

But as the ride is released for its launch, instead of going straight up propelled by the elastic power of both cords, it ascends at a sharp horizontal angles.

The seating pod – with the riders still inside – launched entirely to the left as it appears the slingshot cord on the right-side of the ride failed to provide any lift.

The cord appears to snap in part as the passenger sphere is launched into one of the ride’s metal supports near the top of the structure.

After crashing into the beam the seating pod hung on its side with the presumably terrified riders inside. It is not yet known if they were injured in the incident.

Shocked revellers looked-on as the ride crashed and some gasped out loud as it happened.
