Kharkiv: Residents queue for aid after Russians leave

Hroza Village in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region witnessed a heart-wrenching missile attack during a gathering, claiming 51 lives, among them a six-year-old child.

The attack occurred during a wake at a local cafe, where residents from every household in the village had assembled.

The missile struck as mourners gathered for the funeral service of a local Ukrainian soldier, prompting an immediate response from Ukraine’s Interior Minister, Ihor Klymenko.

He confirmed the presence of individuals from all families in the village during the gathering.

The soldier’s widow, son, and daughter-in-law were among the victims of the attack.

The soldier, previously laid to rest in Dnipro, was reburied in his hometown, a decision that ultimately led to the family’s presence at the ill-fated gathering.

Ukraine’s Defence Ministry swiftly attributed the attack to Russia, asserting that there were no military targets in the vicinity.

While the accusations were made, Russia has yet to issue a direct response to the allegations, deepening the tensions in the region.

Subsequent missile strikes also rocked the city of Kharkiv, leaving a 10-year-old boy dead and 16 others injured when a residential building was hit, according to Mayor Ihor Terekhov.

There are growing fears that sophisticated weaponry, including Iskander ballistic missiles, might have been used in these attacks, raising concerns about the conflict’s evolving nature.

Kharkiv regional head Oleh Syniehubov said the attack was one of the region’s “bloodiest crimes”.

He said: “One fifth of this village has died in a single terrorist attack.”

Since the start of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February last year, the Kupyansk district has been a prominent battleground between the Russian and Ukrainian armies. Initially serving as a crucial supply hub for Russian forces, Kyiv managed to reclaim control in September 2022 after prolonged months of intense fighting.
