A truckie has been hailed a hero after he ran towards a burning car on a freeway and dragged the 80-year-old driver to safety.

Woodchopper Gary Jones was driving on the M1 through Yatala, on the Gold Coast, when he spotted the burning car last week.

After pulling over his truck, Mr Jones called for the elderly man to get out.

But, frozen with fear, the 80-year-old man was unable to move.

Mr Jones, who also works as a volunteer firefighter, knew what he needed to do, dragging the man from the car.

Mr Jones (pictured), a professional woodchopper, said he was just an ‘average citizen’ after he ran towards the burning car to save the life of the elderly man

Mr Jones talked down suggestions from 9News he was a hero, saying he was just an ‘average citizen’.

‘When he was sitting in the car there were flames both sides of him, the upholstery just went up – bang,’ Mr Jones said.

‘I opened the door, grabbed the driver, pulled him out – he nearly got run over … an 80-year-old is not agile that’s for sure.’

Firefighters and police arrived to put the flames out and manage traffic, while Mr Jones left the scene.

The motorist in the burning vehicle was uninjured and treated at hospital for shock.
