Woman scoops £1m on EuroMillions after ‘only popping into Asda to use the loo’

A woman who popped into Asda "to use the loo" bagged herself £1million on a EuroMillions ticket she had not intended on buying.

Ellie Land, 41, had bought herself a ticket on the way home from a friend's house and purchased the EuroMillions-winning card on a whim.

She had headed into the store with her partner of 20 years, Karl Ward, 43, and the pair are still in disbelief at having bagged themselves a life-changing lotto win.

The pair, who said they "popped into Asda" for some bread, milk and to use the facilities, are now planning their dream wedding after 15 years of engagement.

Ellie, who bought the lady who sold her the ticket a bottle of wine, said: "We had popped into Asda on the way home from visiting friends to grab some bread and milk.

"Karl waited for me while I went to use the bathroom, and when I came out he was by The National Lottery counter so I decided to get a EuroMillions ticket for the draw that night.

"I don’t always play, just on a whim, so when my colleague wished me luck, I laughed and said 'if I win something I’ll treat you.'

"Little did I think then that we’d win £1m, I’ll certainly be going back with a little something for her! Thinking back on that day I keep laughing, I spent a penny and won a million!"

While the pair have said they have no need to change their Christmas plans, it would appear they are intent on making big moves for the new year, including a new home to call their own after decades of renting.

Neither of the pair have any retirement plans either, with Karl, a forklift driver, having no plans to quit working just yet.

Ellie added: "Many people have asked if Karl would leap at the chance to stop working – he’s been on night shift for six years – but he feels the same.

"But thinking about it, perhaps we will take some time off here and there to go to France, or even further afield, for a little wine tasting in the vineyards as opposed to St Andrews Hall in Norwich!"
