Cheryl Tweedy is facing fresh heartbreak as the “love of her life” Ashley Cole gets set to marry his stunning Italian girlfriend, a source claimed.
As former footballer Ashley, 42, and model Sharon Canu, 30, reportedly make the final preparations for their nuptials in Rome at the end of this month, a source claims 40-year-old Cheryl has been hit hard by the memories it’s dredged up for her.
“Ashley has always been the love of her life and she has never really got over it. His upcoming wedding has brought back a lot of emotions for her,” the source claimed.
Cheryl and Ashley tied the knot in 2006 when the singer was at the height of her Girls Aloud fame. But they dramatically split after just four years of marriage.
Their wedding took place at Highclere Castle in Berkshire, but the source said, “Ashley’s gone the opposite way with a low-key wedding with Sharon. He’s moved on and wants the opposite of what he had with Cheryl.”
News of the wedding comes after Cheryl’s ex Liam Payne, the father of her son Bear, six, said he had checked into a US rehab centre after hitting “rock bottom”.
The singer, 29, did so after appearing on a podcast where he divulged private details about Bear’s birth. He also said he’d been “diagnosed with a couple of conditions” and thanked Cheryl for “giving me a little bit of freedom to go and get well”.
Cheryl is concerned, but wants the best for Liam. “She wants Liam to be well so he can be a good father,” our source said.
“She doesn’t have any romantic feelings for him – she doesn’t have that lasting love with him that she has for Ashley – but she worries for their son’s sake.”
Before she met Liam, Cheryl gave marriage another shot with French businessman Jean-Bernard Fernandez-Versini. They wed in 2014, but were granted a divorce 18 months later.
In 2016, it seemed she had found Mr Right in One Direction star Liam. But a year after welcoming their son in March 2017, they broke up.
Our source tells us, “With both JB and Liam, Cheryl hoped things would work out, but she simply hasn’t found real love since Ashley. His engagement has stirred up all those old feelings.”
In an explosive episode of Piers Morgan’s Life Stories in 2010, Cheryl broke down in tears and said, “There’s a part of me that will always love him… I love what we had.”
Meanwhile, Ashley said in an interview that he was just “a kid” when he married Cheryl and “made mistakes”.
Ashley met Sharon – who recently enjoyed a hen do in Ibiza with celebrity pal Sam Faiers – in 2014 while he was playing for AS Roma. They now have two children together – Jaxon and Grace.
