Former Coronation Street villain Ryan Clayton has revealed he has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) after waiting for a diagnosis for two and a half years.
The actor, who played Josh Tucker in the ITV soap, took to his Instagram page to share his health news in view of his 18,000 followers on Tuesday.
As part of his lengthy caption, he wrote: “Well, after 2 and [a] half years of realising you don’t ‘grow out’ of ADHD, just because you’re not hyperactive in the way you were as a kid, and 29 years later, I’m an official member of club ADHD.”
Ryan went on to say he wasn’t sharing the news for “pity” as he acknowledged he has a “fully abled body” and is “fortunate” to work in the creative industry, but to help try and stop the stigma instead.
He added: “I am of course aware ADHD isn’t as extreme as some of the other neurodivergent conditions, but I can tell you it’s lot more than being fidgety and it shouldn’t be underestimated either.”

As stated by the NHS, ADHD can be categorised into two types of behavioural problems; inattentiveness (difficulty concentrating and focusing) and hyperactivity and impulsiveness.
The condition includes symptoms such as being restless, having trouble concentrating, constantly fidgeting and acting without thinking. It can often be treated with medicines and talking therapies.
Ryan went on to say that ADHD is “a real f****r for you up there at times too, particularly when you don’t know!”
He explained it was good to finally get some clarity so he can finally understand his mind and talk openly about it without stigma “of being ‘another self diagnosed ADHDer’ because ‘everyone’s got it now’.”

The actor continued: “In the 2 years it took to get diagnosed, despite initial confusions and frustrations, I’ve had an acceptance and a much better understanding for my mind works for sometime now.(sic)
“So for anyone on that journey, whether you’re just realising or on the waiting list, or you’re a friend, partner or family member trying to understand it (and they won’t stop going on about it) I don’t believe that anyone is worse off for knowing (undiagnosed or diagnosed).”
Many of the actor’s followers commented on his post with supportive messages.
One wrote: “Proud of you mate,” while a second added: “Welcome to the club, we are all one big ADHD family! Much love my fellow ADHDEr.”
A third typed: “I’m in the process of getting referred, it’ll be good to finally have an explanation for how I behave and how my brain works.”
“Such admiration and respect,” added a fourth.
Ryan is best known for playing rapist Josh in Coronation Street from 2018 to 2020.
He has since returned to Waterloo Road as Sergeant Mike Rutherford.
