Hayley Tamaddon has been diagnosed with meningitis.

The 45 year old was rushed to hospital over the weekend where she was pictured on an IV drip.

In a new post shared on Thursday morning, Hayley explained that she had a brain scan after feeling her “head might explode”, leading to her latest diagnosis.

In a lengthy statement posted on Instagram, the Emmerdale and Coronation Street actress wrote: “Last weekend did not go as planned…and I ended up in hospital with meningitis.

“I got poorly very quickly. And my temperature wasn't coming down it was going up.

"The light hurt my eyes and my head felt like it might explode. My neck was stiff and my body ached.

“I rang a family friend Anthony Kearns who is a doctor at Blackpool Hospital A&E department and told him my symptoms and he told me to get to hospital asap.”

Hayley continued: “I was taken into a cubicle and straightaway the amazing doctor, Dr Karun, said I think this is meningitis, but at that stage they weren’t sure if it was bacterial or viral.

“So I was given strong antibiotics through a drip. Then a brain scan and a lumbar puncture confirmed it was viral. And a few days later I was sent home.”

Hayley went on to thank the doctors and nurses at Blackpool hospital for “taking care of me” and listed their names, highlighting one medical professional in particular named Caitlin, who "held my hand through the lumbar puncture".

Hayley said: "I squeezed it that tight I honestly thought I’d broken her fingers.

“There were many others whose names sadly escape me. But they were all incredible humans. And I am truly grateful.”

The actress, who appeared on Emmerdale from 2005 to 2007 and played Steve McDonald's schoolfriend Amanda Beckett in Corrie from 2013 and 2015, thanked her followers for their messages of support and promised she is now “on the mend”.

Hayley’s fellow soap stars soon sent supportive messages in the comment section.

Samia Longchambon, who plays Maria Connor on the ITV soap, wrote: “Massive hugs Hayley…rest up”, as Shobna Gulati, who left Corrie in 2014, said: “Sending you love x.”

Georgia Taylor, who plays Toyah Battersby, also commented: “Oh gosh darling, you poor thing! So glad to hear you’re doing ok now. Sending love xx.”
