Kanye West and social media controversy go hand in hand and if wearing White Lives Matter jumpers at a recent fashion show in Paris wasn’t enough, he’s followed it up by arguing that Black Lives Matter is a ‘scam’.
Black Lives Matter is an international political and social movement that aims to highlight examples of racism and racial inequality experienced by Black people.
Posting on Instagram, Kanye said: ‘Everyone knows that Black Lives Matter was a scam.
‘Now it’s over. You’re welcome.’
The 45-year-old rapper’s comment came after he recently hosted a fashion event to debut his Yeezy SZN9 collection where models were seen wearing the slogan White Lives Matter, an appropriation of Black Lives Matter, which has drawn criticism.
Kanye, who goes by the name Ye these days, purportedly spoke to the crowd at the event: ‘I am Ye, and everyone here knows that I am the leader. You can’t manage me.’
Kanye was spotted with conservative political commentator and pro-Trump activist Candace Owens, who was also donning White Lives Matter clothing.
Like many events and projects Kanye – who also made an appearance in Balenciaga’s show – has announced in recent years, the SZN9 show was quickly organised and some clothes that debuted on the runway were reported to have arrived mere hours before the show was about to start.
In response to the White Lives Matter slogan, and now the post decrying Black Lives Matter, many of the rapper’s fans have expressed their opinions.
‘You lot are shocked at Kanye wearing a White Lives Matter shirt like the man didn’t support Trump,’ one person commented.
Another said: ‘Kanye’s decision to wear a White Lives Matter shirt is disgusting, dangerous, and irresponsible. Some of y’all will rush to defend him. You should ask yourselves why.’
It is not the first time that Kanye has been criticised for airing conservative views in public, and in 2018, he said that 400 years of African-American slavery sounded like a ‘choice’.
He later went on to apologise for his comments.
