Kate Middleton is notoriously considerate when it comes to royal protocols, and often follows the family’s strict rules when it comes to fashion, beauty, and etiquette.
However, eagle-eyed fans noticed something unusual about the Princess of Wales’ attire as she arrived at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle for the traditional Easter Sunday service.
Although Kate, 41, looked stunning in a cobalt blue coat dress and matching hat, it was her nail varnish that had people talking.
Rather than sticking with the royal protocol of only wearing nude colours, or no nail polish at all, Kate was instead spotted wearing dark red coloured varnish on her nails in a rare move.
Princess Kate is known for never wearing nail varnish in public, in keeping with the strict royal rules.
Although it remains a bit of a mystery as to why the royal women aren’t permitted to wear colourful nails, according to some sources it’s because the royal family consider colourful or false nails to be ‘vulgar’, whilst others think it’s to do with ensuring they always have a neutral shade that will match any outfit.
Ever since she officially joined the royal family in 2011, Kate has rarely been spotted wearing any nail varnish at all, and usually opts to have completely bare nails instead, although she will occasionally wear a clear or very pale pink on them.
The rules were particularly enforced whilst Queen Elizabeth II occupied the throne, with her never being spotted with anything other than a pale, neutral pink manicure during her reign, with sources close to the family revealing her majesty’s preferred polish was ‘Ballet Slippers’ from Essie and she had never worn another colour since 1989.
Both Princess Kate and Meghan Markle took note of the Queen’s preferred shade, with Meghan, 41, wearing the shade for her wedding to Prince Harry, whilst Kate reportedly wore a slightly different shade called ‘Allure’ from Essie for her 2011 wedding to Prince William.
Etiquette expert William Hanson explained "skin-coloured" nail polish is preferred, "so hot red and bright pink, for example, are not correct, especially for official occasions and particularly during mourning".
"So it's either translucent or dusky pink – so that would basically be the colour of your nails so it looks natural," he toldThe Sun.
It’s unclear whether this is one royal rule that King Charles is less strict about enforcing, or whether Kate simply forgot or didn’t have time to change her manicure in time for the event.
