Kirstie Alley was madly in love with John Travolta but his wife called her out

Cheers star Kirstie Alley was once "madly in love" with her Look Who's Talking co-star John Travolta.

The Emmy-award winning actress – who has died of cancer aged 71 – shared in a 2018 podcast how their feelings were mutual after they fell for each other on set in 1989, and said that not sleeping with the Hollywood star was "one of the hardest things I've ever done."

Kirstie, who was married to Baywatch actor Parker Stevenson at the time, said that her marriage was a large part of why she didn't pursue a physical relationship with John.

Kirstie and divorced in 1997 while John had married actress Kelly Preston in 1991.

Speaking to Dan Wootton on his podcast, Kirstie discussed her feelings and their decision not to embark on a physical or sexual relationship.

She said: "I will say it’s one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, the hardest decision I’ve ever made, because I was madly in love with him — we were fun and funny together.

"It wasn’t a sexual relationship because I’m not going to cheat on my husband. But, you know, I think there are things that are way worse than sexual relationships, than cheating on someone that way.

"I consider what I did even worse because I actually let myself fall in love with him and stay in love with him for a long time."

Kirstie revealed that she continued to flirt with the actor even after he married his late wife.

She said: "Kelly came up to me, and they were married then, and she said, ‘Erm, why are you flirting with my husband?’

"And that was sort of when I had to make a decision and that was pretty much the end of that."

While it may have ended in heartbreak, the actress said she had no regrets over falling in love with her co-star, and said they "would have devoured each other" and been like "two blazing stars that just fizzled out."

Kirstie passed away after a short battle with cancer, that she did not make public.

Following the announcement of her passing, John penned his own sweet tribute to the actress, sharing a photo of the pair of them together.

He wrote: "Kirstie was one of the most special relationships I’ve ever had. I love you Kirstie. I know we will see each other again."
