Lottie Tomlinson has opened up about the importance of having a big family following the loss of her mum Johannah Deakin six years ago and her sister Félicité in 2019. The 24-year-old said seeing an “empty chair” at family meals in particular are hard as she pines for her late loved ones.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, the younger sister of Louis Tomlinson said having a close family has made her want more children with boyfriend Lewis Burton.

The couple welcomed their first child together, a boy named Lucky, back in August.

Gushing over being a new mum, Lottie said: “I’m loving it, I keep saying to everyone I’ve got a really good baby and I’m so lucky for that. I can’t believe how good he is.

“He’s such a happy little boy and he sleeps well, so I feel very lucky. It’s so nice to finally have a family and to be happy.”

Lottie went on to gush about how grateful she was to have a close family particularly when it came to dealing with grief.

On whether she’d like more children, she said: “Yes definitely.

“I think that’s always something that I’ve wanted because I know how amazing that’s been for me, especially with the situations we’ve been through.

“Knowing that we had that support system, it definitely makes me want to create that with my family.”

Having a big family, Lottie added, “makes a difference” through hard times.

“There’s always someone around to lean on if you need them,” she gushed.

“I thank my mum for that, she gave us a big family and also taught us to be strong and be there for each other.”

Lottie said she was also “lucky” to have a supportive partner like Lewis.

The 30-year-old dealt with his own grief in 2020 following the loss of his then girlfriend Caroline Flack aged 39.

Lottie opened up about her experience with losing loved ones as part of Sue Ryder’s Empty Chair campaign.

Research found that three quarters of people who have experienced a bereavement skip meals because they don’t like eating alone.

Three-fifths of grieving people also said that being invited over for dinner helped with their grief.

Lottie said of her involvement: “My beautiful mum was a proud mother to her seven children and worked as a midwife for 14 years. She was passionate about helping and caring for people. She loved life and raising her children and helping others bring theirs into the world. She showed so much strength and bravery right until the end.

“Family meals are always hard because it reminds you that that special someone isn’t there.

“Seeing an empty chair around the table really hits home that they’re not there. In my family we find raising a glass to that person has helped us, to celebrate and remember them.”

She went on to say the family still feel her mum and sister’s presence, adding keeping their memory alive is important.

“And then doing work like this keeps me close to them because I have to talk about them and talk about my experiences, so it’s good to be able to do that,” she concluded.
