Tiffany Haddish reveals why she bought herself a wedding dress

Tiffany Haddish admits buying herself a wedding dress despite no plans to tie the knot after split from Common: It’s ‘something I could wear on a yacht’

Tiffany Haddish recently made the odd choice to buy herself a wedding — even though she has no immediate plans to walk down the aisle.

The 43-year-old comedienne admitted that she couldn’t resist purchasing the elaborate gown while chatting with People at the AliExpress Summer Pop-Up Tour launch on Saturday at The Grove in Los Angeles.

The Girls Trip star, who partied earlier this month with Cameron Diaz and Zoe Saldaña at one of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour stops in LA, said she’s planning to dye the wedding dress a new shade of blue and to wear it while aboard a yacht.

‘It was beautiful and it looked like something I could wear on a yacht or whatever. I’m dyeing it this beautiful blue color — it’s almost like a purplish blue — and it is going to be amazing,’ she gushed.

Then she corrected herself: ‘Well, I’m not dyeing it. I paid somebody else to do it for me, actually, but I know it’s going to be amazing.’

No rush: She doesn’t have any immediate plans to wed, however, after her split from the rapper and actor Common in November 2021; seen in January 2020 in LA

Haddish — who was initially married to Army veteran William Stewart from 2008 until 2013 — went on to add that she doesn’t understand why women spend ‘so much money’ on wedding dresses as she claimed that Chinese shopping apps can make custom ones at a fraction of the price.

In particular, she raved about the ‘e-tailer’ AliExpress, which had created the dress she was smitten with enough to buy.

The online clothing maker was also hosting the event that she attended.

‘I don’t know why girls spend so much money on gowns because [AliExpress] will custom make it for you. You can write the creator or the seller and say, “These are my measurements, this is what color [and fabric] I really want,” and they’ll have all these options for you! If you don’t like it, you can always send it back.’

Although she was usually happy with the results, she also gave away some of the designs she wasn’t in love with to those in need of fresh clothing.

‘But I usually end up liking it or I end up giving it to some of my foster youth and have them wear it,’ she said.

Earlier this year, Tiffany explained to the outlet that she was ‘dating herself’ and was keeping her options open when it comes to looking for love.

‘I’m dating me! I’m enjoying my options, but I’m not bringing none of them to no carpets. They haven’t earned that privilege,’ she gushed.

Marriage seems to be on the back-burner for Tiffany — at least in the near future — following her difficult split from the rapper-turned-actor Common nearly two years ago.

After their November 2021 breakup, he went on to claim that it was a ‘mutual’ split during an appearance in December of that year on Hollywood Unlocked With Jason Lee Uncensored.

‘[We] came to the understanding that this is what’s gonna be best for us,’ he said in December 2021, describing the breakup as a ‘mutual decision,’ but Haddish now disputes that rosy characterization of the breakup.

Although the two were the picture of love after they began dating at the height of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic in 2020, things had soured between them by the following year.

In a Washington Post profile from July, Tiffany said she realized something was amiss with the relationship when Common (real name: Lonnie Rashid Lynn) began to withdraw and left her out of key events.

According to her, he scored invites to a birthday party for Barack Obama without getting her a plus-one, and he also left her out of a concert, though it wasn’t clear if he was performing or merely attending.

But most serious was the fact that he didn’t even invite her to his own birthday party.

Shortly afterward, he delivered the bad news to her — over the phone.

Bad news: In July, Tiffany claimed her split from Common was not ‘mutual,’ as he had claimed. She said he stopped inviting her to events toward the end before telling her he wanted to break up

‘It wasn’t mutual,’ she said. ‘It was more him saying, “I think this relationship has run its course.” And I was like, “OK. Like you gonna be a 50-year-old single man. Okay?”‘

The disappointing way the relationship ended was a stark contrast to just how happy Tiffany was at the height of her romance.

She called it ‘the healthiest, the funnest relationship I’ve ever had,’ adding, ‘It’s where I felt safest out of all the relationships I’ve ever had.’

She and Common began their relationship at the height of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic in 2020, and after three months together they went public in August of that year.

Earlier, Tiffany delved into some of the difficult and even abusive relationships she was comparing her latest one to.

Jamie Masada, the owner of the Laugh Factory, an iconic comedy club with locations in Hollywood, Southern California, Chicago and Las Vegas, recalled a night when she insisted on doing her set on stage even though she had arrived with a puffy lip and a black eye.

He said he allowed her to sleep on the couch in a house owned by the club for several weeks after the incident to make sure that she was away from her abuser.

The profile also referenced Tiffany’s memoir The Last Black Unicorn, in which she admitted to defecating in a former boyfriend’s shoes, which she later made her Girls Trip character hilariously suggest.

Elsewhere in the piece, Tiffany detailed her difficult history with multiple miscarriages.

The story opened with an anecdote about her calling a doctor five days after suffering a miscarriage.

In the days between, she attended a party thrown by Eddie Murphy, did two voiceover recording sessions, and made appearances at a fundraiser and a shelter for single mothers.

She even made time for an appointment with a repairman to fix the dryer at her home.

‘Well, I’m going to be honest with you,’ she told the nurse over the phone at the doctor’s office. ‘This would be my eighth [miscarriage]. I’ve got a uterus shaped like a heart. It just won’t keep anything in.’

The story also noted that Tiffany had recently taken parenting classes as she mulled the possibility of adopting a child.

However, her own history experiencing child abuse made her hesitant to pull the lever.

She noted that she shared her miscarriage news with one friend, but keeps it secret from many others to avoid them feeling sorry for her.

‘I don’t want people saying: “Are you okay? Are you all right?”‘ she said. ‘Like a wounded animal, I just rather go in a cave by myself. Lick my wounds.’

But she still managed to find some levity in the situation with a throw-away joke during one of her shows.

‘My jokes are my babies,’ she said on stage. ‘They are my children. And just like my children, jokes take time to develop. And just like babies, I really want to make it work.’

Then, after a pause, she added, ‘But just like a baby, some of these jokes will miscarry.’
