How often should you wash your hair? Stylist gives top tips for your crowning glory | The Sun

HAVE you ever wondered how often you should be washing your hair?

According to stylist Scott Miller of Bauhaus salons in Cardiff, Wales, washing every day may be too much – and some people only need to wash once a week.

How often should you wash your hair?

Hopefully, you're bathing yourself daily – but that doesn't mean you need to wash your hair along with your body.

Miller said that washing your hair every day, as some people do, might be overkill – and overwashing your scalp and strands will stimulate the sebaceous glands to produce more oil, making it more greasy.

He told Wales Online: “Unless you’ve been working really hard at the gym or have been on a building site and it’s covered in dust – you don’t need to wash your hair every day.

"There's a big #nopoo movement at the moment, with people boasting about going weeks without shampooing, but for most of us, cutting out one or two washes will make a big difference."

The frequency you need to reach for the shampoo depends on your style.

Some celebrities have gotten the memo.

In 2018, Marvel star Brie Larson shared an Instagram photo four days after the Golden Globes, admitting she hadn't washed her hair since the ceremony and felt like she could go another few days.

Kim Kardashian also wrote on her now-defunct website: “I only shampoo it twice a week to prevent it from drying out. I also love using hydrating at-home hair masks.”

In 2008, Adele even admitted that she usually skips shampoo altogether.

“I only wash it with water. Last night I washed my hair with shampoo for the first time in two months," she told Glamour.

Ciara waits two weeks between washes, Amanda Seyfried goes three days, and Jennifer Aniston washes every second or third day.

But it's not a one-size-fits-all formula, so you have to figure out how often to wash based on your own hair length and type.

Long hair

If you have long, flowing locks, you likely need less washing as the oil will take longer to reach the ends.

Scott recommends you wash no more than twice a week, shampooing twice to make sure it’s really clean and towel-drying before you use the conditioner.

If the hair looks flat at the roots, use a dry shampoo.

Coloured Hair

Dyed hair is likely to be drier and therefore should need less washing as well.

To keep those natural oils that help condition your colour-treated hair, shampoo just two or three times per week.

This will also help your colour last longer and help maintain the health in your hair.

Curly Hair

Curly hair requires some special considerations since it's so prone to dryness.

Experts recommend washing your hair no more than every other day, and as little as once per week if your hair is particularly dry.

A good blowdry should last you a week.
