I save so much on rent by sleeping in my car & washing at the local leisure centre – people say it’s gross, I don’t care | The Sun

A WOMAN has revealed that decided to stop paying rent on an apartment and instead now lives in her car.

Alauna Roby has lived in her Honda Accord for the past two years and is currently based in Colorado.

She explained that she sold everything to travel and live on a budget and loves the freedom of living in her ‘box on wheels.’

In a recent clip, shared on YouTube, Alauna explained that she was working three jobs to be able to afford to pay for her rent.

However, she decided to renew her lease and live and travel in her car.

She said: “I could either keep my apartment and keep working three jobs to make do, or I could leave my apartment, not renew my lease and so I said, you know what, I have to take this opportunity.”

She later added: “I live in my car because it allows me that freedom to be this traveller.

“I have my personal space still, I have my own little bubble.

“I have everything I need in a box on wheels and that’s very comforting to me.”

Not only this, but such a lifestyle has enabled her to save thousands of pounds every month on rent and instead of paying bills, she saves cash by showering and going to the toilet at a local leisure centre.

In one clip, shared on social media, Alauna opened up about a typical day in her life.

She said: “I live in my 2006 Honda Accord and this is what it's like to wake up in a 24 hour Planet Fitness parking lot.

“I start by getting dressed and then the longest part of my morning routine is always taking down all of my window coverings. But they are essential for sleeping in my car, so I do it anyway.

“Then I climb over into the driver's seat and take down my window coverings there.

“I actually already went into this Planet Fitness last night to take a shower for all of you who say that I don't shower, so this morning I can go ahead and leave straight away and drive to Panera Bread.

“But first – the bathroom. I used the restroom and washed my hands. I brushed my teeth in my car. That's weird to show on camera.

“Anyways, now it's time to drink my hot bean juice to wake up and get some computer work done.

“So I use this as an opportunity to charge some of my electronics and here I'm actually editing a YouTube video.”

When asked how she washes her clothes, Alauna confirmed: “I do pet sitting jobs or a laundromat.”

Alauna’s TikTok clip, which was posted under the username @alaunaroby, has clearly left many open-mouthed, as it has quickly gone viral and has since amassed a staggering three million views.

However, social media users were left divided at Alauna’s living situation – while many were eager to praise her home on wheels, not everyone was as keen.

One person said: “You’re making this work and that’s incredible. You’re more inspirational to me than any mansion dweller will ever be.”

Another added: “I love this vibe.”

A third commented: “So cool.”

Meanwhile, someone else penned: “Pretty much how it’s gonna be for most people because rent goes up every year.”

To this, Alauna replied: “Exactly, I’m just getting a head start.”

At the same time, not everyone was as impressed with Alauna’s car life, as one user wrote: “God I couldn't. This is too uncomfortable and gross.”

A second chimed in: “That sucks. I’d hate to live in my car.”

Another claimed: “So you’re homeless. Ok.”

Whilst someone else claimed: “Slob life.”

Not only this, another cruel troll noted: “So you can afford Panera but not a place."
