IF you've got young kids and are looking to welcome a dog into the family, then you may just want to take note.

That's because there's a certain popular breed you should avoid, according to dog trainer Will Atherton.

In the clip shared to TikTok (@iamwillatherton), he begins by explaining how choosing the correct dog breed is something that should be taken incredibly serious.

"As a canine behaviourist, I've had the unfortunate pleasure of working with lots of dogs that come from young families that have bitten, attacked or done some kind of damage to young children," he explains.

"And it's an absolute travesty and there's usually a one track path towards rescue centres and euthanasia.

"Now this could be avoided with lots of training for all breeds."

However, the dog whizz notes that certain breeds are definitely going to fit the bill better.

"For me, I always recommend breeds that have low prey drive, low hunting drive and low herding drive," he explains.

"So breeds like the Border Collie might be quite a gentle, trainable dog but that herding drive gets them in trouble with children all the time."

He continues: "And it doesn't take a genius to work out how dogs that were bred for fighting or serious guarding capabilities could go easily wrong with children.

The post has since gone viral, racking up a whopping 92k views and several comments from social media users.

"Our collie is brilliant with my daughter but like any breed he's been trained and doesn't herd," wrote one.

A second penned: "I will ALWAYS have a Lab …. I have Corgis too but Labs are sublime."

A third commented: "My Collie is the best with my son."

Meanwhile, a fourth noted: "I had a German Shepard when my eldest was a baby, then a Collie when my youngest was a baby, both best dogs ever, not put a paw wrong."

Another added: "We've had the best luck with show line rough Collies with our kids but who can deny a Lab."

A further chimed in: "My two Collies are great but we live in fields so plenty of land. don't get Collies unless you know what you're doing."
