Traditionally a royal bride is lent a tiara from the Queen’s personal collection to mark her wedding day, and the monarch will often bestow a new royal title on the royal groom too. But over the decades, husbands-to-be have been known to engage in the gift-giving as well, often opting to give their brides a sentimental jewel to mark the special day.
Most recently, Princess Eugenie stunned when she married Jack Brooksbank in a custom Peter Pilotto and Christopher De Vos gown, which she paired with satin peep-toe shoes by Charlotte Olympia.
The Princess wore the Queen’s Greville Emerald Kokoshnik Tiara for her foray down the aisle in 2018, perhaps as her ‘something old’, while her thoughtful earrings may have acted as her ‘something new’.
Eugenie wore a pair of diamond drop earrings with dangling emeralds which perfectly complemented her emerald tiara, and her green eyes.
The Royal Family said in a statement: “Princess Eugenie is wearing the Greville Emerald Kokoshnik Tiara, lent to her by Her Majesty The Queen.
“The tiara was made by Boucheron for Mrs Greville in 1919 in the fashionable ‘kokoshnik’ style popularised in the Russian Imperial Court.
“The tiara is made of brilliant and rose-cut diamonds pavé set in platinum, with six emeralds on either side. The tiara was bequeathed by Mrs Greville to Queen Elizabeth in 1942.
“Princess Eugenie is wearing diamond and emerald drop earrings which are a wedding gift from the Groom.”
Another bride who wore her wedding present from the groom on her big day was Sophie, Countess of Wessex.
Sophie was gifted the Anthemion Tiara by the Queen for her 1999 nuptials, which was believed to have been made from dismantled jewels from the royal collection.
She paired the headpiece with two wedding presents from Prince Edward, a black and white pearl cross necklace and a pair of matching pearl earrings.
The jewels were crafted by Asprey and Garrard, the same jeweller who created Sophie’s stunning trilogy diamond engagement ring.
The pearls were the perfect match for Sophie’s wedding gown by Samantha Shaw which was encrusted with delicate pearls and crystal beads.
Kate Middleton was also thought to have received jewellery from Prince William to mark their wedding in 2011 but she didn’t wear it on the big day.
William reportedly gifted Kate her sapphire and diamond drop earrings which match the 12-carat oval sapphire engagement ring she wears.
Although the earrings are a firm favourite of the Duchess now, she opted for a pair of dangling diamond acorn earrings reflecting the Middleton family crest when she walked down the aisle instead.
There is a long royal precedent for brides to receive a gift from the groom when they marry, and the Queen also received a special present from Prince Philip.

When the Princess and the Duke of Edinburgh tied the knot in 1947, Philip gifted her a diamond bracelet with a touching back story.
To craft an engagement ring for Elizabeth, Philip’s mother Princess Alice of Battenberg dismantled a tiara from her own collection.
These gems were used to make the Queen’s iconic diamond engagement ring, but there were also some spare gems left over.
The leftover diamonds were used by Philip Antrobus Ltd to make the Edinburgh Wedding Bracelet, an Art Deco-inspired cuff bracelet now beloved by Kate Middleton.
