We reported how the International Olympic Committee had banned Rhodesia from the Munich Olympics after 27 African nations threatened a boycott.

After the fall of the white-dominated government the country became Zimbabwe and was allowed to compete in the 1980 Moscow Games.

84 years ago (1939)

Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union signed a non-aggression pact which would divide Poland between the two countries.

The Molotov-Ribbentrop treaty also included a guarantee of peace between the nations and a commitment that neither would ally itself to the enemies of the other.

The agreement ended when Hitler invaded Russia in June 1941.

38 years ago (1985)

West Germany’s head of counter-intelligence Hans-Joachim Tiedge was uncovered as a communist spy after defecting to East Germany.

At least six others were suspected of involvement in Tiedge’s spy ring, while a number of secretaries, including one working in West German Chancellor Helmut Kohl’s office, were also agents.
