Cate Blanchett upcycles one of her most repeated red carpet dresses for the SAG Awards

A-list actress Cate Blanchett is no stranger to the red carpet, and her looks have caused quite the commotion over the years.

Whilst many actors pull out a new outfit for every ceremony, Cate has shunned tradition and instead insisted on rewearing outfits from previous red carpets.

One of her most recycled is a sleek all black Armani Privé lace gown, which she first wore to the 2014 Golden Globes ceremony, before rewearing it for the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. The original dress was completely sheer with carefully placed lane panels, and featured a high neck, puff sleeves, and a dramatic cut out back that was revealed when she turned around.

Never one to shy away from rewearing her outfits, this time Cate has opted to upcycle the original Armani gown and give it a modern update.

For the 2023 SAG Awards, the Tár actress wowed on the red carpet with a floor length black sequin dress that was tailored to fit her figure perfectly. The front featured an on-trend curved cut out design, and was finished with lace panelling that was made from lace left over from her original Armani Privé gown.

The dress was custom made by the Italian fashion house especially for the actress, and featured a high neck as a nod to the original dress, with had cap sleeves that created a bold silhouette.

Cate paired the look with a romantic wavy bob and soft, rosy makeup to balance the edgy style of the gown, and was shown just before the event in a snap posted by her stylist Elizabeth Stewart,

Recently, the Australian-bord actress picked up the award for Best Leading Actress for her powerful performance in Tár at the EE BAFTA Film Awards 2023. She accepted the award wearing a reworked version of a Maison Margiela dress that she originally wore on the red carpet for the 2015 Oscars.

Cate uses styling and accessories to update and change up her looks, showing just how versatile the right jewellery and hair style can make even the most memorable of dresses.

Fans and other celebrities alike are quick to praise Cate for her sustainable approach to red carpet style, with one fan commenting on Elizbaeth’s Instagram post: “Our queen of sustainability”, whilst another was clearly inspired, saying: “I love that!! Makes me want to repurpose some things from my own closet.”

Cate and Elizabeth have announced their intention to continue repurposing some of the actress’ greatest award ceremony looks. Elizabeth said: "In her words, Beautiful things can come out of sustainability!"
