DIY doctor goes blind and nearly dies after cracking his own neck every day

A bloke went blind and gave himself a stroke after his daily DIY chiropractic routine went horribly wrong.

Andy Wilson, 53, had suffered from a bad back since 12 years old and saw a number of professionals.

But in a bid to avoid hefty chiropractor fees, he decided to take his physical therapy into his own hands and “twist” his neck daily.

A well-known medical no-no, Dr Raymond Bertino of the University of Illinois concluded that neck cracking can injure arteries in his research.

The dad had been doing his routine for 31 years to save cash – seemingly problem free.

But on March 5, as he mimicked an expert’s jerking motion, he had a “near-death experience”.

Andy had just ruptured an artery in his neck which caused a stroke and him to go blind.

He explained: “I've met different [chiropractors] over the years and they all do this one neck adjustment.

“I'd relax my muscles and twist my head from side to side."

Almost 1 in 10 people with a tear in a neck artery were found to have undergone chiropractic neck adjustment, Dr Bertino's study found.

But this time, Andy could tell something wasn’t quite right after he felt “pressure” in his head.

He said: “My limbs didn't feel normal, I picked up my hand and it started to wave on its own."

Andy, from New South Wales, Australia, mustered up the strength to call his uncle Craig and pull himself upstairs.

Things went from bad to worse when Andy’s vision started to rapidly decline.

He added: “I was losing my sight, part of my left vision on both sides started to disappear.

“It was the weirdest thing. It wasn't one side, it was half of both eyes. I was extremely disoriented and nauseous.

“I threw up quite a bit, I'd completely lost my coordination, I could feel the pressure in my head.”

He discovered that his dodgy neck manipulation actually induced several life-threatening injuries.

Andy said: “I was actually having a stroke. The combination of the neck adjustments and my back injury caused a calcium build-up in my spine.

“This caused my right artery to sever resulting in three brain clots and a stroke to the occipital region of my brain."

When he was picked up by an ambulance, paramedics accused him of being drunk or high on drugs.

Staff quickly discovered that Andy actually had “three brain clots” and kicked into high gear to try and save his life.

The stroke specialist was “horrified” to find out about Andy’s dodgy DIY chiropractic feat – and needless to say, he became determined to kick the neck-cracking habits.

Since returning home on March 9, the dad has been recovering well and is “99 per cent” better.

He concluded: “I definitely won't be doing those neck adjustments ever again.

“The hospital outright forbade me, I can't even get a neck massage.”
