Viewers of Interior Design Masters slammed a contestant last night after she built a ‘tree fort’ in a wedding lodge makeover.

Designer Monika Charchula, from Nottingham, appeared on the programme alongside three other contestants as they fought it out for a place in the semi-final.

The four designers were challenged to transform two lakeside lodges at a wedding venue in Rutland for £1,500 each, with Monika paired with fellow contestant Tom. 

Monika ended up painting the bedroom a dark khaki green, while building a wooden A-frame structure over the patio table on the terrace. 

However many viewers were highly critical of Monika’s efforts, with one writing: ‘Monika literally plonked five branches over a really ugly patio set. That was it.

‘I cannot get my head around Michelle.’

Another wrote: ‘Come on, Monika has one good week and she’s in the last three? She should have gone already.

‘Also Jesus, does she start crying every time she had a conversation? Surely consistency should count for something and Terri was consistently better.’  

A third added: ‘Cannot believe Monika is still there.’ 

‘Monika put a few branches up against a patio set and it was wonderful apparently!’ another wrote.

‘And they didn’t work together till they realised they weren’t on brief! She should have gone last week!’

One added: ‘How is Monika still there? Cages over the bed in a black room with a dead duck on the wall?’

This week the four designers were tasked with transforming two lakeside lodges in Rutland, featuring high ceilings and exposed beams.

Working in pairs, one designer was responsible for the indoor area, while the other was working on the bedroom and outdoor.

Monika was challenged to make over the groom’s lodge with her teammate Tom.

Monika said she wanted to ‘go with dark elegance and dark romance’, while Tom said they shouldn’t go ‘too masculine.’

Many of those watching confessed they had been left bemused by Monika’s design choices, with one calling the patio makeover a ‘monstrosity’ 

Monika said: ‘I hope to show more of my style and true self, I can’t screw it up.’ 

She said: ‘My vision is dark romantic. Almost like dark academia vibe.’

Meanwhile she confessed she was struggling with the outdoor space, saying: ‘This space is very tricky, the terrace. I don’t know how to transform the space.

‘This week is the week I show everything I have. I feel like I persuaded Tom, it was me who said, “Let’s do what we want, instead of doing one design.”‘

Meanwhile Tom said he would have liked the designs to have more cohesion, adding: ‘But I’m supporting Monika in her decisions.’

Monika was challenged to make over the groom’s lodge with her teammate Tom and said she was keen to make the space ‘dark and romantic’

Monika painted the bedroom in a dark khaki colour and added a dramatic chandelier to the space 

But on day two, Monika was having doubts about her design choices, saying: ‘I’m hoping by the end of today I’m going to feel better.’ 

As the designers finished up the rooms, Shane Brady joined Michelle Ogundehin to judge the wedding lodges.

He explained he hoped the buildings wouldn’t be ‘too themed.’

Monika said she felt ‘so so proud’ of her bedroom, adding it was ‘everything she was hoping and more.’

She insisted: ‘It’s dark and moody but it’s elegant and magical.’

The judges said they felt the bedroom was ‘hanging together very well’, with Shane saying he ‘liked the bedside tables.’

Meanwhile Michelle said the patio was ‘so romantic’, adding: ‘It’s just a beautiful continuation of what we have seen inside.’

Shane said he ‘loved the A-frame structure’, saying: ‘To sit under this as the sun goes down and enjoy the lakeside view, that’s a really special moment.’

Ultimately, the judges decided her work was strong enough to go through to the semi-final alongside her teammate Tom and fellow contestant Jack.
