Need some Christmas shopping inspiration? A perfume is often at the top of many of our wishlists, but scents aren’t always easy to shop. If someone hasn’t given you a specific brand to buy for them, there are so many options to choose from. So how do you know what to buy?
New research from Hey Discount is set to make scent shopping a lot easier this Christmas. The site analysed Google search data and social media stats to find out which perfumes are the most universally liked – and some might surprise you.
So, from a TikTok-trending luxe scent to an all-rounder that many of us have been buying (and re-buying) for years, here are the top perfumes to gift someone or to treat yourself to this Christmas…
Unisex: Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540, £215 here
If you haven’t heard of this scent, you probably haven’t been on TikTok much. It’s not a new launch at all – in fact, it launched back in 2015 – but it’s found fame on social media thanks to its celebrity fans like Drake, Rihanna and Olivia Rodrigo.
With over 110 million TikTok views, 206,000 Instagram hashtags and nearly 6 million Google searches, it’s safe to say that this scent is a top buy for this year – if you can afford the hefty price tag.
For men: Dior Sauvage, from £57 here
You might not be so surprised to read that the second most popular perfume, according to the research, is Sauvage. With Johnny Depp as the face and countless celebrity and influencer fans, if you’re shopping for a man this Christmas then he’s almost guaranteed to like this scent.
For women: Chanel No.5, from £55.25 here
This perfume is probably best known for being Marilyn Monroe’s favourite scent. In fact, she famously said in an interview, “You know, they ask me questions. Just an example: ‘What do you wear to bed? A pyjama top? The bottoms of the pyjamas? A nightgown?’ So I said, ‘Chanel No. 5,’ because it’s the truth.”
If you’re interested, it also comes third on the 2022 trending perfumes list thanks to its impressive 2.6 million Google searches and 30 million TikTok views.
For men: Creed Aventus, £210 here
Skip down the list a little and this luxe fragrance features as the second most popular men’s offering. With notes of pineapple, blackcurrant, musk and oak moss, it’s sure to impress the man in your life on Christmas day. With 75 million TikTok views, it’s also very popular with social media users.
For women: YSL Black Opium, £82 here
There’s a reason this YSL scent has won plenty of awards. It has sultry black coffee and cedarwood base notes, making it a nice romantic buy for your partner. It’s also had around 4.5 million Google searches worldwide, so it’s definitely universally loved.
Unisex: Calvin Klein CK One,£32 here
Closing the list is this cult classic buy that plenty of us have probably sniffed at one point. This genderless scent has been around since 1994, making it the oldest fragrance on the list. No wonder, then, it’s racked up over 1.5 million Google searches.
