Roddy Ricchs Certified-Diamond Hit "The Box" Sued For Copyright Infringement

Roddy Ricch’s career has been on the up, especially since he just finished accompanying Post Malone on his North America Twelve Carat Toothache tour. However, the rapper was just hit with a copyright infringement lawsuit that could have costly consequences.

Greg Perry filed the lawsuit in Manhattan on Tuesday, which claims that Roddy copied elements of his 1975 song “Come on Down” for the 2019 hit “The Box.”

The complaint alleges that the violin sequence in Roddy’s song completely rips off the violin part features in his song.

“Expert musicology analysis confirms that the ascending minor scale played by violin at the opening of ‘Come On Down’ is a distinctive musical element which recurs a total of six times throughout the song,” court documents argue.

“Comparative analysis of the beat, lyrics, hook, rhythmic structure, metrical placement, and narrative context by a musicology expert demonstrates clearly and convincingly that ‘The Box’ is an unauthorized duplication and infringement of certain elements of ‘Come On Down,’” it continues.

Perry’s song has been sampled in various songs over the years, including in Young Jeezy’s “Wordplay” and Yo Gotti’s “I Remember.” But in these cases, permission was granted to use the song. For example, Perry was given a 60% interest in Young Jeezy’s song.

Roddy isn’t the only one being named in the lawsuit. It’s also going after his producer 30 Roc, Atlantic Records, and others associated with “The Box’s” production.

“The Box” was certified Diamond last year, so there are significant profits to be had if Perry’s lawsuit is successful. It’s unclear how much Perry is hoping to get from the case. So far, Roddy’s team hasn’t commented on the ongoing lawsuit.

The musician just finished a massive tour with Post Malone that concluded with a show in Los Angeles on November 15th. The duo collaborated on the song “Cooped Up” from Post’s new album.

After announcing the tour, Post Malone opened up about what it would be like hitting the rode together.

“I love touring and I love meeting my fans and singing these songs with them, but at the same time, it’s such an a– kicker,” he said. “My back kills me, my neck kills me, my feet kill me. There’s a lot to think about, and there’s a lot to focus on.”

“You kind of have to have chameleon eyes and look every which way and keep track of what’s going on at all times,” Post Malone continued. “It’s the give-and-take — you give up so much and you receive it in love, and that’s what everything is about: feeling loved. That’s what everybody wants.”
