TikTok’s ‘greasy hair’ hack uses salicylic acid to create weightless bouncy roots

It doesn’t matter how meticulous you are with your haircare routine; at some point, greasy hair gets the better of us all.

Whether your hair is naturally fine and oily, you thought you could squeeze in one more day between washes, or you’re just suffering the results of a humid summer, we’re all constantly battling against greasy roots that leave your hair looking limp and lifeless.

That's why it’s no surprise that a video has gone viral on TikTok that shows a simple hack that helps keep greasy roots at bay and leaves your hair looking light and voluminous, without an oily strand in sight.

Beauty lover Elle McNamara, who goes by the handle@BambiDoesBeauty, shared the straightforward hack on her TikTok account, which promptly racked up hundreds of thousands of likes and saves from people who are desperate to try out the trick for themselves.

It couldn’t be easier to try at home either; to achieve the weightless look, Elle recommends using a salicylic acid treatment on your scalp once a week, which removes excess oil, dead skin and product build up from your hair and scalp.

A build up of these leaves your hair limp and lifeless and weighs down your hair at the roots, leaving it looking greasy and dull.

In her video, Elle uses the Bumble and Bumble Scalp Detox, £29.50 here, and sections her hair before liberally spraying the foaming cleanser onto her roots and massaging it in. She leaves the product in her hair for several minutes, before washing her hair as normal and returning to show off the results.

Gone are her greasy, limp locks, and in their place are weightless, bouncy curls that look soft and shiny. Her followers were amazed at the results, with one writing: “I need whatever is in that bottle,” whilst another said: “I have never bought something so fast.”

It comes as no surprise that the Scalp Detox is now completely sold out everywhere, however her followers were quick to drop their own recommendations in the comments section.

One follower recommended The Inkey List’s Salicylic Acid Exfoliating Scalp Treatment, £11.99 here (was £14.99), saying it was: “So good as a pre-shampoo and so cheap!”

Some other affordable options include Boots Ingredients Exfoliating Scalp Serum With Salicylic Acid, £4.50 here, and Revolution Haircare Haircare Salicylic Acid Clarifying Scalp Serum for Oily Dandruff, £8 here, both of which can help cleanse the scalp and leave your hair looking and feeling thoroughly cleansed.

Time to ditch the dry shampoo, because that's your summer hair sorted!
