Amazon Kindle users looking to upgrade their ereader may be tempted to switch over to Kobo, thanks to a new device Rakuten has just launched. Amazon’s big ereader rival has just unveiled its new Kobo Clara 2E, which is available to pre-order now ahead of a September 22 release date. Priced at £129.99 and fitted with a warm light for night reading, the Kobo Clara 2E is a direct competitor to the Kindle Paperwhite – but if you care about the environment you may have your head turned by Kobo’s new device.

That’s because the Kobo Clara 2E is being billed as a “more eco-conscious” ereader, thanks to it being made from over 85 percent recycled plastic.
This includes 10 percent ocean-bound plastic, and over the course of a year Kobo plans to divert over 200,000 plastic bottles from our oceans and over a million CDs and DVDs from landfills to help with its recycling efforts.
The packaging for the Kobo Clara 2E is also made from recycled paper, is recyclable itself and is printed with soy ink.
If you care about the environment this level of sustainability may sway you over from Amazon to Kobo.
Amazon is also big on sustainability, with the Kindle Paperwhite labelled as a ‘Climate Pledge Friendly’ product.

The packaging for the Kindle Paperwhite is made from 95 percent wood-fibre-based materials from responsibly managed forests or recycled sources.
However, the ereader itself is made from 60 percent post-consumer recycled plastics, which lags behind what Kobo have hit with the Clara 2E.
Not only this, but Kobo has pledged that its future ereaders will be made from recycled plastics as well.
Speaking to the Good e-Reader website, Kobo senior manager Victoria Cacioppo said: “Customer feedback is one of the biggest things we keep an ear out for.
“It’s something we’ve heard in the past and the voices are getting louder.”
In a further boost to sustainability, Cacioppo said Kobo will release long-term firmware updates which will help discourage people from upgrading and just stick with their current device.
While Cacioppo also said future Kobo products will have improved repairability.
The latter is especially good news and should help with getting even more years of use out of an ereader.
Previous Kobo could be easily repaired with removable backs which meant batteries or internal SD cards could all be easily replaced.
That is not the case at the moment, with Kobo ereaders having glued backs – but this could all change in the future.
While electronic companies are more and more showing how environmentally friendly they are, one of the best things everyday consumers can do to help is keep their existing devices for longer.
Pioneers in this field such as Fairphone help ensure consumers can keep their device for as long as possible thanks to incredibly lengthy software support as well as making devices easily repairable.
Kobo making their devices more repairable – along with their commitment to the environment – could help sway over any ereader fans that care about the planet from Amazon to Rakuten.
