A new Apple feature will enable iPhone users to use an AI “clone” of their voice – and many users describing the tech as "creepy as hell".
The new technology, called Personal Voice, is intended for iPhone users who have lost the ability to speak to create a synthesised voice that sounds like them so they can communicate with family and friends in a familiar way.
Voices can be created by simply reading through a 15-minute script that contains all of the sounds the AI needs to create a “cloned” voice.

The new voice is then added to a range of voices for the iPhone’s Text-to-Speech function, which reads out text messages or emails.
The feature will be released in September, with the launch of iOS 17, but it is already being tested by users who have signed up for the Public Beta.
Some of those users have uploaded videos demonstrating how uncannily-accurate the computer voice can be.
“Apples new Personal Voice thing is pretty cool,” wrote Dan. “Robot me sounds ok, but I did the recordings at 6am hence my monotone dying sonorifics…”

Gadget fan S Balaprakash added that, while the result is still slightly robotic-sounding, to have such an accurate recreation of your own voice after training the system for just 15 minutes is “pretty crazy”.
Not everyone was convinced though, with Twitter user Yasar Shah calling it “pretty creepy” and dozens of tech fans agreeing with him.

Apple boss Tim Cook, who took over after the death of the corporations’s co-founder Steve Jobs, stressed that the voice print technology was aimed at helping disabled people to use the company’s market-leading phone.
“At Apple, we’ve always believed that the best technology is technology built for everyone,” he said.
“Today, we’re excited to share incredible new features that build on our long history of making technology accessible, so that everyone has the opportunity to create, communicate, and do what they love.”
