If you thought Apple’s latest iPhone was a little on the pricey side, that’s nothing compared to one it released in 2007.
A first generation iPhone – the model originally revealed by Apple co-founder Steve Jobs in 2007 – has just sold for an eye-watering amount at auction.
The gadget is still factory sealed in its original packaging and managed to sell for over 75 times its original £269 price tag.
How much did this OG smartphone end up going for?
The auction closed at a whopping $39,339 (£34,887).
Not bad.
When Steve Jobs first revealed the device fifteen years ago, he called it a combination of ‘an iPod, a phone, and an internet communicator’.
The original iPhone revolutionised the smartphone market and ignited the current technological arms race.
All that from a device that had a 3.5-inch screen, a 2-megapixel camera and a web browser.
The most modern iPhone, the recently-released iPhone 14 Pro, is on sale now with prices starting at £1,099 and finishing at £1,749 for the top-spec iPhone 14 Pro Max version.
Naturally, you should be having a look around your attic and the back of any drawers for some unwanted tech that might fetch you a bit of coin.
Recycle Your Electricals, a UK-wide campaign motivating and making it easier for everyone to reuse and recycle unwanted electricals, has crunched the numbers.
Apparently, there are 20,700,000 unused but working tech electricals – worth a possible £5.63 billion – currently hoarded in UK homes.
According to the campaign, here’s what you could expect to make on your old tech:
- Games consoles: Re-sale value can range from an Xbox One at £110 to a Nintendo Switch at £200.
- Tablets can be re-sold for between £193 and £420.
- Laptops resale value range between £274 and £420.
- Desktop computers, including the monitor, could be re-sold for around £250.
Okay, so it’s not quite £35k, but every little helps.
