Freeview users urged to claim huge free upgrade to major TV channels today

Freeview users across the UK are being urged to 'retune' their set top boxes as the BBC rolls out a high-definition upgrade to more than a dozen channels.

Telly lovers will be able to watch their regional BBC news channel in HD for the first time starting today.

Previously, local news was only watchable in standard definition, and BBC1 HD viewers would be subjected to a pop-up message stating that local shows aren't available in HD.

Now the Beeb is beginning its nationwide rollout of the new HD channels to bring everyone's devices into the 21st century.

The first batch of regions received their new HD service today, including the East Midlands, West Midlands, London, Yorkshire, East York & Lincs, and the Channel Islands. Other regions across the North, South, East and West will get their new channels from April 26.

Kieran Clifton of the BBC said in a blog post yesterday: "We have now completed the roll-out of our BBC One HD regions on satellite platforms, and from tomorrow (Weds), we will start the roll-out for Freeview/Youview viewers in England."

If you already have BBC One HD tuned in on channel 101, you won't have to do anything. But some devices might force you to retune your set top box.

The instructions can differ between devices, but typically you will need to press the menu or settings button on your remote and look for a 'set-up', 'installation', 'update' or 'tuning option.

Follow the steps on screen and choose 'factory reset' or 'first-time installation'. If you're asked, agree to save the channels that are found and your retune should begin automatically.
