Killer machete-wielding plant uses ‘leaf brain’ to hack, slice and stab targets

Have you ever been threatened at knifepoint by a houseplant?

It could be more likely than you think, thanks to a deadly new invention called Plant Machete.

David Bowen, a designer, has built a knife-wielding robot that uses a houseplant as a 'brain' to control its movement without any human intervention necessary.

The common philodendron is rigged up with sensors on its leaves, which gather electrical signals from the plant and use these to slice, stab and swing the weapon in its robotic 'hand' autonomously.

David explained in a video: "The system uses an open source micro-controller connected to the plant to read varying resistance signals across the plant’s leaves.

"Using custom software, these signals are mapped in real-time to the movements of the joints of the industrial robot holding a machete. In this way, the movements of the machete are determined based on input from the plant."

Luckily, the plant can't leave its installation point, which means it won't be coming after the vegans for revenge any time soon.

Robots are undoubtedly on the rise, with Elon Musk revealing the Tesla Optimus robot just last week.

The SpaceX and Tesla CEO promised that the Optimus robot would cost less than £18,000 and showed it walking unaided at the Tesla AI Day event last Friday.

Musk says that the robot will one day work in Tesla factories helping out human workers, and even appear in homes one day.

Musk called it a "fundamental transformation for civilisation as we know it", but given his track record of actually delivering on promises, who can say for certain?
