McDonalds switching off WiFi and playing Beethoven instead to ‘calm down teens’

A McDonalds is cutting off WiFi access for its customers following a 'rampage' by up to 30 'youths'.

A McDonalds in Wrexham has announced it will turn off Internet access and blast classical music at its customers instead, in a bid to discourage young people from spending too much time there.

The drastic change follows reports that 20-30 young people 'rampaged' through the streets including the McDonalds, with reports of signs and coins being thrown at restaurant staff, a fire extinguisher being set off, and an assault.

The 24-hour McDonalds is one of several businesses to take action against allegedly unruly children and teenagers.

Local police inspector Luke Hughes said he was 'absolutely appalled' by the behaviour which centred around a bowling alley and a "certain fast food outlet".

Inspector Hughes said: "I have spoken about these locations a few times and the concerns I have about youths gathering, as well as some of the behaviours we were starting to see that were causing concern and upset."

He added: "A well-known fast-food retailer will be playing classical music from 5PM in the evening, so unless we have some local and unruly Beethoven enthusiasts, it should discourage some issues."

It seems that restricting WiFi access and playing Beethoven is becoming standard procedure for McDonalds branches faced with antisocial behaviour.

A McDonalds in Sheperds Bush London has previously used classical music to annoy young customers and deter bad behaviour.

McDonalds previously said: "We have tested the effects of classical music in the past and played it in some of our restaurants as it encourages more acceptable behaviour."

While it seems to be in use across the UK, McDonalds bosses clearly haven't seen A Clockwork Orange if they think Beethoven will deter violent or unruly behaviour.
