Video footage of a strange, cat-like creature has been widely circulated online after it was spotted skulking inside a hardware store in a village India.

The unknown creature – which officials believe came from the forest – has been compared to the iconic demogorgon from Stranger Things.

It was seen inside a hardware store in the Muzaffarpur district of Bihar, a state in eastern India.

As word spread around, locals gathered to try and catch a glimpse of it.

According to local media reports, the animal entered the shop late on Wednesday last week and was seen again the next day when the shop opened for business.

While speculation apparently spread both online and around the neighbourhood that it could be a creature from another world, the real explanation is probably something far more mundane.

Online commentators have suggested the animal is a large civet – a nocturnal mammal native to Africa and Asia.

Despite a similarity to cats, civits are actually more closely related to moongooses.

Although ususally covered in fur, this particular one seems to have lost most of its coat – giving it a look not unlike that of the Stranger Things beastie.

Local reports claim those that spotted the creature informed the forest department about it.

The officials are currently still trying to capture and identify it.
